What is Mario’s Extended Up B?
Mario’s extended Up B is a recovery technique that trades horizontal distance for greatly increased vertical distance. It’s useful as a mixup to throw off edgeguards and to simply recover when you’re just too low otherwise.

How to perform:
- Input Up + B
- Input back on the stick for at least one frame between frames 1 and 4 - Note that diagonals are allowed, so it’s possible to even do Up+Back+B
- Move the stick back to neutral
- Mario will get the maximum height from the Up B
Notes
- Mario starts moving on Frame 5, after which it’s not possible to alter the trajectory
- If you turn around, you held Back too long
- If you get a normal Up B, you pressed Back too late
Reverse Extended Up B
It’s possible to do a Reverse Extended Up B, in which you get the Extended Up B height with a turnaround. The principle is the same, with a few differences.
How to perform:
- Input Up + B
- Input forward on the stick for at least one frame between frames 1 and 4 - Note that diagonals are allowed, so it’s possible to even do Up+Forward+B
- Input Back on the stick
- Mario will get the maximum height from the Up B and turn around
Practice makes perfect
Hyrule Castle is the best stage to practice on because Mario can reach a few platforms from a grounded Up B only if it’s extended:
- From the middle area, Up B to the 2nd platform
- From the left edge of the first platform, Up B to the 3rd platform
