c-mash 2027

The greatest European Smash 64 major c-mash is BACK!

We are happy to announce the confirmed dates:

  • 2027-04-16 to 2027-04-18

After a very successful first edition of this tournament series last year, we are leveling up every aspect of the tournament. But, wait, there’s more: We will host the very first Smash Remix offline major in Europe!

Of course, c-mash is way more than just a tournament. We all come together as part a community about every aspect of the game: Hardware, software, theory, the meta game, and of course having fun.

This April, Berlin will again be the place to come together to play, learn, socialize, meet old friends and make new connections. Seasoned veteran or total newbie, everyone who shares our love of this game is welcome!

Want to contribute?

If you want to present or display something like hardware (controllers, consoles, …), software (mods, training packs), art (posters, figures, stickers, clothing, …), tools (adapters, cases, …), host a small workshop or organize anything else that has to do with Smash 64, please get in touch!

Is remix doubles possible?

It is not planned as a properly organized event with tourney fee and signup on start.gg, but in principle, we are open to it. The biggest problem for us is the limited time we have.

If you are asking if we have setups that can do it, of course we do! And like I don’t know we can do exhibition matches or money matches on stream, we should have time for that. A whole tourney probably not, though.

Alright, some preliminary information about the tournament format: We are discussing to again do the Swiss format we did last time for round 1, to determine seeding for the bracket.

Last time, there were some problems with the way it turned out, but we believe that this could have to do with the specific start.gg Swiss matching algorithm.

We will look into this. The thing is, first round formats other than Swiss will also have problems, all formats will have different kinds of problems. I personally believe that Swiss is in principle still the best.

I think have some of the lowest placements in Swiss bracket start in losers would be better than it just being seeding. It felt as the wins didnt matter that much last time.

I’m a big fan of swiss in CS but I think the implementation from this year wasn’t great because of the reason Olikus mentioned. In CS they often run 16 team events with swiss, where once you win 3 matches you qualify for playoffs, once you lose 3 you’re out of the tournament. Something like this would be cool but with upper and lower bracket instead. Obviously this exact format only works with the right amount of entrants (16/32 etc.). What I wanted to ask though what’s your plan when there’s an odd number of participants?

thank you for your comments, we will take this into consideration.

It felt as the wins didnt matter that much

this can indeed be frustrating, and i can understand this. we definitely will take this into consideration, as this experience is important.

i believe there are bigger problems to solve, though. we want a fair seeding, and last time the swiss matching algorithm had some problems.

splitting the first phase up up into multiple pools just so that we can have round robin can potentially screw up the seeding more if one messes up who goes in which group. furthermore, the matches matter just as little, in fact perhaps even less, than with swiss.

the big difference is that we have many more early “top” matches (two close to equally strong players in contention for getting a high placing), and a big win there doesn’t have that big of an impact as in the bracket. well, this might feel not so satisfying, but nevertheless it is fair, and actually gives more and better information for fairer seeding for the bracket (even if it feels like things don’t matter that much), in principle.

the general point is: in split up pools with round robin, the top players are in separate pools, win their games against the “scrubs” as expected, and the way they are seeded in bracket therefore depends more on the initial grouping in their pool. that’s why it feels like matches matter less: there are more throwaway matches that you win in an expected way with pools, and in contrast, with swiss, you play more against players close to your level, but it feels funny because they matter less than in bracket.

regarding putting people in losers so that it feels like things matter more: artificially making people lower than they should by putting them into losers in the bracket does not make anything fairer. it might feel better. but your idea can/should work this way: we can have have more swiss rounds and then less people in top X, and can put some people in losers. we might do that, so what you say does work out in this way, @olikus.

@u9verse odd people in swiss are awkward but standard, and it isn’t too bad. this is standard in many tournaments.

swiss has multiple issues, and i personally believe the unfamiliarity and weird scenarios (just like the ones you said), as well as the scheduling and organizing (long down times) are the biggest ones.

but swiss is very good in principle. we may or may not do swiss.

we will take all of your criticisms into account as best we can, thank you for letting us know!
